(English Abstract)
In this paper, we propose a novel wireless backhaul architecture enabled by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) mounted on the aerial platform. We assume that an immediate traffic increase occurred in an urban area, and the unmanned-aerial vehicle base-stations (UAV-BSs) are rapidly deployed to serve the ground users in the area. Since the direct backhaul link from the ground source can be blocked due to several obstacles from the urban area, we propose to reflect the backhaul signal by aerial-RIS to make it successfully reach to the UAV-BSs. We optimize the placement of aerial-RIS and the phase of each RIS element, which leads to the increase of energy-efficiency under guaranteeing the reliable backhaul link for every UAV-BS. We show that the complexity of our algorithm does not exceed the quadratic order, which implies high computational efficiency. We verify the performance of the proposed algorithm via extensive numerical evaluations and show that our method achieves an outstanding performance on energy-efficiency compared to benchmark schemes
