(English Abstract)
One of the most potential applications of the Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) is to supplement the conventional health care facility by collecting different information via in-body or out-body sensors and make them available to the health care personnel via an instantly formed ad-hoc network. The collected information can be of heterogeneous importance. As such, the most vital information should be reported as quickly as possible. In the networking protocol stack of WBAN, this issue can be addressed by devising suitable scheduling/access schemes in the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. Until recently, numerous MAC protocols have been suggested to meet the requirements of various health care applications over WBAN. In this paper, we provide a state-of-the art survey of such protocols. In particular, we discuss about the approaches they incorporate to handle emergency traffic and also discuss about their limitations. Furthermore, we provide some prospective approaches that can be considered for alleviating those limitations.
