(English Abstract)
A wireless sensor network is a network of compact micro-sensors equipped with wireless communication capability. Such a network is sensitive to energy consumption and hard to be synchronized. Moreover, computing capacity is limited at sensor nodes. Perceiving these points, we consider the pure ALOHA as a MAC scheme for wireless sensor networks. In the pure ALOHA, a delivery attempt for a MAC PDU must be repeated many times to attain the throughput at a certain level. However, such a repetition of delivery attempts incurs an increase in energy consumption. Considering energy consumption and throughput performance, we present an optimal number of delivery attempts for a MAC PDU in this paper. Reflecting the loss incurred by energy consumption as well as the loss representing throughput degradation, we first formulate a stopping rule problem to find an optimal number of delivery attempts for a MAC PDU. Assuming a general joint distribution for the results of delivery attempts, we then solve the stopping rule problem and explicitly obtain an optimal stopping rule, i.e., an optimal number of delivery attempts for a MAC PDU in the pure ALOHA.
