As the WLAN services have been penetrated into homes, especially dense residential apartment houses, an interference problem becomes a hot issue. The WLAN service providers have to address the interference problem in order to provide a certain level of quality of service (QoS). The interference problem contains not only the interference between the ISM band devices but also the interference between WLAN channels. In this paper, we concentrate on the WLAN channel interference in the dense residential environment and propose a practical channel assignment method to mitigate the WLAN channel interference. The conventional channel assignment utilized only three non-overlapping channels because the current WLAN service is based on the IEEE 802.11b standard. We carried out two WLAN channel interference experiments and found out one more channel was available in Korea. Therefore, CHANNEL 1, 5, 9, 13 are available for the channel assignment in the dense residential environment.
