In multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks composed of battery driven nodes, each node has a limited lifetime. Some nodes participating in an ad hoc network may consume more energy than other nodes because they work as intermediate nodes, resulting in a short network lifetime. We introduce a balanced energy consumption algorithm by threshold-tuning (BECT) for mobile ad hoc networks. BECT enables nodes to consume energy in a balanced manner to increase network lifetime. Our algorithm achieves this with little overhead. We implement BECT by modifying DSR (Dynamic Routing Protocol), and our simulation, using GloMoSim 2.0, shows BECT improves DSR by 17-30% in balanced energy consumption.
