(English Abstract)
Recently, many MAC protocols are proposed to support both safety applications and non-safety services for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), such as 802.11p-based, TDMA- based, and hybrid MAC (combination 802.11p-based and TDMA-based) protocols. In this paper, we propose a flexible MAC protocol, which allows vehicles can dynamic switch from TDMA-based to 802.11p-based operations or vice versa. A flexible MAC protocol depending on the vehicle density is chosen as a specific MAC protocol to operation controlled by a road-side unit (RSU). A flexible MAC protocol outperforms TDMA-based MAC (VeMAC) under the low vehicle density and 802.11p-based MAC under the high vehicle density in terms of the channel utilization and system throughput.
