무선통신에서 다중경로 전송에 의한 신호 감쇄, 채널 에러에 의한 패킷 손실 등은 모바일 기기들에게 치명적인 시스템 성능 저하를 가져온다. 또한, 일정한 수준의 서비스 (QoS) 혹은 서비스 음영지역을 지원하기 위해서는 대역폭 효율성의 극대화가 필요하다. 이러한 여러 문제들을 충족 시켜주기 위해 MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) 기술의 발전이 급속히 증가하였으나 상대적으로 단말기의 크기, 가격, 복잡도, 수명 등의 제약으로 실제 많은 어려움이 따른다. 이러한 단점을 극복하기 위해 협력통신 (Cooperative Communication)의 개념이 제안 되었다. 본 논문에서는 협력통신의 기본 개념과 최근 많은 연구가 진행되고 있는 협력통신에서 사용할 수 있는 MAC 프로토콜의 최근 연구 동향과 디자인 이슈에 대해서 살펴본다.

(English Abstract) |
In wireless communications, packet errors due to the transmission of multiple transmitters, result in signal attenuation, channel errors that degrades the system performance to mobile devices. Also, maximization of bandwidth is required to provide a certain level of service or to expand the communication coverage area. To cope with these issues, MIMO technology has received much attention, however, due to the device's size, price, complexity, and life span it still poses implementation difficulties. An approach known as cooperative communication provides a design alternative where single-antenna mobile nodes "share" their resources to provide the benefits MIMO systems offer, generating spatial diversity. In this paper we introduce the concept of cooperative communication and survey recent work conducted on the MAC layer while outlining the design issues.
