With the advancements of GPS and mobile communication technologies, the need for LBS(Location Based Services) is increasing rapidly. To fulfill such a need, much research work has been recently conducted on efficiently searching and storing the location information of moving objects. In particular, due to the geometric and time-varying characteristics, special techniques are often required for storing and managing moving objects efficiently.
A conventional approach to track moving objects is basically based on periodic report of the current position of vehicles. Accordingly, the main challenge of vehicle location inquiry system is how to reduce the frequency of report and thus to decrease the system overhead.
In this paper, we propose a novel approach which is designed to minimize the number of inquiry operations by taking into account the velocity and movement pattern of moving objects. More specifically, in order to reduce inquiry cost significantly, the proposed approach updates the position of moving objects only when the object moves out of the pre-defined area and also adjusts the inquiry interval by considering the velocity of moving objects. Our extensive performance studies show that the proposed approach reduces the number of inquiry operations by up to 70% compared to the previous approach and thus increases the search performance of vehicle trajectories.
