(Korean Abstract)
Flooding fake news on new social platforms, such as Twitter, is exerting undesirable impacts on everyone. Many researchers have been trying to understand and explain the fake news phenomena happening in the new area to deal with the problem. One of the notable works is one that relates to emotions. Previous researches suggested that fake news tends to provoke a different set of emotions compared to that of true news. However, this tendency itself vaguely shows what benefits spurring a specific emotion make in fostering fake news to propagate in such a context. In this paper, we studied the impact of provoking specific sentiments on spreading fake and true news on Twitter. From the case of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, we inspected related Korean tweets with different sentiments and truth values to compare structural virality [1] and various network statistics during propagations. Our findings suggest that (1) tweets with anxiety sentiment generally propagate better compared to tweets with anger sentiment, (2) the diffusion of anxiety tweets tend to make its propagation rely on broadcast while that of anger tweets on person-to-person, and (3) anxiety-sentiment fake news tweets diffused farther with more engaged users when compared to groups with other sentiments and truth values.
