Video encoding techniques are on spotlight now; researchers not only from that specific field but also from many other areas including networking and cloud computing keep sharp eyes here. However, most of the powerful video encoding
schemes have very expensive as well as problematic licensing system. Due to the ubiquitous necessity of video encoding, a royalty free, fully functional and high performance codec have been sought from industry and academia for a long time. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the new royalty free video encoding scheme AV1 from the Alliance for Open Media for very low bit rate coding. Results show that, for the same video bit rate, with default parameters AV1 obtains better quality as compared to two other dominant encoding schemes H.264 and H.265,
although the software encoder of AV1 takes longer time to encode.
