(English Abstract)
In the past decades, various hierarchical clustering methods have been proposed in order to efficiently minimize the energy consumption of sensor nodes. However, such clustering methods may lead to fast energy consumption on cluster head nodes. To address this problem, the cooperative communication method has been proposed. However, the existing cooperative communication methods select cluster heads without a consideration on residual energy of each sensor node. Furthermore, the choice of cooperative cluster head depends only on the distance from cluster head, which in turn causes unbalanced energy consumptions among sensor nodes. To cope with this problem, we propose a novel method that selects the cluster heads and cooperative cluster heads considering the residual energy and the distance to target node. Our experiments show that the proposed method produces highly balanced clusters that are energy efficient and achieves up to 2 times higher survival rates than the previous clustering schemes, under various operational conditions.
