(English Abstract)
The cutting of the tooth with a bur is one of the most essential procedures that should be offered from a virtual reality based dental training system. Since instruments for tooth cutting are small and sharp as compared to the tooth, it is needed that not only elaborate but also accurate collision model handling the plastic deformation of the tooth caused by cutting instruments. To address this issue, we propose a real-time collision model, which the tooth is represented as a volume model with a distance field for the tooth. This volume model is shared by not only a procedure to visualize shape deformation of the tooth but also a procedure to detect collision and compute feedback force for haptic rendering. A method using an octree is also presented to accelerate collision detection between the tooth and the instrument.
