The seven invariant moments as feature descriptors satisfy the well-known primary conditions of invariance with respect to translation, rotation, and scale variation. However they are very sensitive to noise and vary in broad range of magnitude so that the conventional minimum distance classifier does not well operate on pattern recognition with seven invariant moments. From this point of view, in this paper, a new decision rule for seven invariant moments, called a parallel search algorithm, is proposed and applied to traffic sign symbol recognition. The simulation results on traffic sign symbol recognition show that the parallel search algorithm for seven invariant moments performs well in the average ratio criterion compared with the conventional signatures and another diametric signatures derived in this paper.
