(English Abstract)
Internet access over Wi-Fi networks has been dramatically increasing in recent years. The limited coverage of Wi-Fi networks results in challenging problem of discovering new Wi-Fi access points(APs). In particular, an active scanning method of a Wi-Fi interface severely wastes the precious energy of mobile devices. The use of a low power ZigBee interface is an attractive solution to detect Wi-Fi APs in terms of energy efficiency. However, it still suffers from considerable false detection in the grey zone. In this paper, we characterize the grey zone that degrade the detection accuracy when mobile devices employ ZigBee interface to search Wi-Fi APs. In addition, we propose NAZ, that uses a cooperative communication mechanism among ZigBee interfaces to increase the detection rate of Wi-Fi APs. The results show that NAZ recovers the grey zone by up to 90%.
