A fuzzy logic-based system was devised to identify power distribution faults and other activities utilizing the arc and RMS behavior of the current signal. One unique aspect of this approach is it allows the protection devices to act upon the events and, after a period, determines the cause of the transients and identify them. The parameters used in the identification are loading level change and arcing activity. Fuzzy logic was applied to accommodate the inexact parameters and was tested using recorded event data.
