In this paper, matrix inequality conditions on the terminal weighting matrices are proposed for linear continuous time-varying systems under which nonincreasing and nondecreasing monotonicities of the optimal cost and the Riccati equations are guaranteed. It is shown that when the monotonicity of the optimal cost or the Riccati equations holds once, it holds for all subsequent times. It is also shown that the proposed terminal inequality conditions guarantee the closed-loop stability of the receding horizon control (RHC). The proposed terminal inequality conditions for the cost monotonicity and the closed-loop stability in this paper include most well-known existing terminal conditions as special cases. The corresponding results for time-invariant systems can be directly obtained from those of time-varying systems.
