JCDL workshop CALL FOR PAPERS Workshop on Digital Libraries in Asian Languages: Accessing, Indexing, and Organizing Digital Libraries in Asia At the JCDL Conference June 24-28, 2001, Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, Roanoke, VA, USA The First ACM+IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries ______________________________________________________ With the rapid advances in Asia of digital library projects, it would be essential for the larger DL community in the U.S. and Europe to access and participate in them. Unifortunately Asian languages are hard to master, translate and understand, the workshop will bridge the international DL community with the Asian practioners, researchers, and librarians in a broad sense so that open and flexible multilingual access to these projects will be provided. Furthermore we will develop research areas that cross-cultural aspects may be explored to enrich the wider scope of DL activities. The workshop will invite about 30 participants in three topics: (1) Multiple language resources -how to construct multilingual resources (e.g., corpora and thesauri)? -translation between different languages (2) Cross-cultural aspects in collections and services -similarity and dissimilarity in cultural aspects -metadata for cross-cultural collections -cross-indexing and referencing with Western and other cultures (3) Multilingual access to networked digital libraries -how to develop multilingual access schemes? -how to leverage search engines in english to asian languages? Please send a 2-page abstract with full name, affiliation, and email address to Su-Shing Chen, University of Missouri-Columbia at chens@missouri.edu |
