Researches on Multimedia Systems and Document Recognition

Researches on multimedia algorithms and systems being conducted in Hitachi Central Research Laboratory will be presented. The laboratory has about 10 research departments with about 1,000 workers, and Multimedia Systems Research Department is one of them, which he has worked for. In that department, research areas include speech recognition and synthesis, document analysis and recognition, natural language processing, image processing, and their application systems including speech translation system, mail sorting machine, information retrieval, geographical information system, sign-language translation, and so on. The first part of his talk will be the introduction of these research activities. 

The second part of his talk will be on Hitachi Letter Sorting Machine and its postal address recognition technology. Japan has introduced a new postal automation system in 1998, where the new letter sorting machines automate the delivery carrier sequence sorting. To do so, the machine need to read the full addresses of the city name, town name, address number, building number and room number. Sometimes, the recipient name needs to be recognized. The new recognition technology developed for this kind of machines will be presented. The current recognition accuracies of the full address are 85% thru 95% for printed letters, and 65% thru 75% for handwritten letters.
